Why You Like It: Decoding Musical Taste

A Revolutionary Exploration into the Science of Musical Taste

Premiering on PBS March 2025

In simple language, Nolan breaks down the sources of our universal love of music, what it says about us, and how it makes our lives richer. Why You Like It on PBS is divided into 8 segments: covering the link between music and our biology, anthropology, physics, culture, psychology, and emotion. Each segment includes rich and elucidating animation, and provides valuable tips on how to empower your musical taste!

Nolan explains our musical taste!

Illustrating each segment of this musical taste break-down is a thrilling song from the live concert performed by Nolan’s all-star band, The Mighty Mighty, plus four special-guest vocalists: Ledisi, Aymée Nuviola, Etienne Charles, and Malike Tirolien. The concert was recorded at Royce Hall in Los Angeles in October 2023 and features a beautiful video display by Naomie Kramer.

A stunning musical concert!

Beyond Nolan’s rich discussion of music and the stunning accompanying concert, Why You Like It on PBS includes a ground-breaking interaction between the viewer and show  via the Why You Like It app. Viewers can easily download the app from their phone (via the QR Code on the screen). The app will follow the show as it proceeds, and will display a simple question after each segment, along with links for “deeper discovery”. Completing all questions will give viewers access to their own personalized WYLI Music Playlist from Nolan!
